St. Mary’s Student Badly Injured in Explosion - December 7, 2021

Jaden Mendez, 7th grader at St. Mary’s School in Crown Point, was involved in a horrible accident on Sunday. He was helping his father Jimmy, who owns a heating & cooling repair business, on a job. When Jimmy went to the van to retrieve a part, he heard a loud explosion. When he ran back to the job, he saw that blast was powerful enough to throw his son Jaden out of the building they were working in. Jaden suffered burns to his face, arms, and legs. At one point Jaden was to be airlifted due to the severity of his injuries, but weather prohibited this. He is currently at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago with severe swelling to his neck and breathing tubes down his throat. He nearly lost his hands. Jaden’s doctors plan to perform skin graft surgery in the days to come. “Jaden is a wonderful young man and always quick with a smile. Just like his dad, he is always willing to help others. Jaden is an only child and his family is very close knit. Mr. Mendez volunteered to direct our morning car line traffic for many years and always greeted every family with a smile and a kind word. Mrs. Mendez is a wonderful lady. Our entire community is devastated that Jaden and his family are suffering,” said principal, Tom Ruiz. A GoFundMe page was created by one of the 7th grade moms, Mrs. Amanda Ewing.
